For little to no reason I decided to make a blog. Don't know why, all I'm gonna do is use it to vent my rage at some of the more....less smart actions people take on fairly simple subjects. Like tomorrow Metroid Other M will be Arriving at my doorstep. I've seen reviews, I've heard fan feed back, and although most reviews pretty much say the game is very very good, minus a couple of flaws. 3 reviews seem to have caught peoples attention the most. The Game Informer review, Destructoid, and the notorious X-Play review.
I read all of them, and from what I read, only the Destructiod review made any logical sense. Why? They actually reviewed the game as appose to the other 2 who moaned about Samus's characterization. Despite the reivew itself coming off as slghtly more positive than the final score, They at least explained why they fealt certain aspects didn't play as well as they expected. Which is fine and what professional reviewers do. Now on to the failures.
The GI review is essentially the a bunch of complaints about the story and specifically Samus's character, which Other M is suppose to focus on. They talk about gameplay, but do so in a way that comes off as nit-picking without fully elaborating about what irritates them. They made gross over-exaggerations of gameplay features and mechanics that screens and footage disproved right off the bat. The review was trying to act as negative as possible while ignoring some of the basics of story telling and gameplay. What comes after ward is a review filled with ho-hum arbitrary complaints that that borderline common misconception to just flat out lying. But then again Game Informer was never a good place for reviews (or anything in that matter) in the first place.
Now comes the crap-tastic X-Play review.
Actually review isn't the right word. A rant from an angry female game nerd is a more accurate description. Both the video review, and text review focus more on how Samus is portrayed and gamesplay is mentioned as an after thought. The review could easily be summed up as - Samus has daddy issues, "Confession Time" is so lame, "She cant do anything without A MAN'S permission", and how ammo and health regain in the game is "stupid". The actual issues with gameplay seems like an after thought. Like, oh yeah, and the controls are confusing.- Speaking of health and ammo regain, the review fails to mention how this works, along with how basic combat works, didn't even mention puzzles, and well gameplay as a whole. The health regain is only activated when near death and only restores (as far as I've seen) up to 2 energy tanks and full ammo. It makes sense as the only way to regain health is via save points (some thing else they did not mention).
Next the reviewer goes on to say the game is sexist because Samus is a non-sexualized female video game icon. Bullshit of the highest order as beating the game in recorded timing allows players to see her in various swimsuits and bikini's. It's pretty PG but to say she was NEVER sexualized is to not have played any game prior to Other M, or suck at them really bad. They made a follow up video where they actually explain why they made the decision they did, but it's only there to stir up more controversy and prove they are mostly incompetent.
Well....I feel loads better! I look forward to playing the game tomorrow.
I guess I could blog about that too I guess....
